Parenting is often considered the most challenging job in the world, and it’s easy to understand why. You become responsible for another life for the entirety of your own. In the realm of anime, we encounter numerous examples of both exceptional and inadequate parents. Many stories also feature fathers who are noticeably absent from their children’s lives. However, this is not the case with Tetsuo Tosu, the main character of the anime series My Home Hero.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Episode 11 of My Home Hero.
Based on Naoki Yamakawa’s suspenseful manga with illustrations by Masashi Asaki, the anime adaptation premiered on April 2 and fittingly concludes during the spring anime season on Father’s Day. What better occasion to acknowledge the bravery and dedication that fatherhood demands than by celebrating one of the most courageous fathers in the world of anime and manga?

An Ordinary Man Capable of Everything
Tetsuo Tosu is an ordinary man, setting him apart from other anime fathers who possess near-superhuman or fantastical abilities. In the anime My Home Hero, Tetsuo appears to be an average guy, but his dedication to protecting his family knows no bounds.
Our first encounter with Tetsuo is during his somewhat feeble attempt to reconnect with his college student daughter, Reika. However, as soon as he discovers that her boyfriend is mistreating her, Tetsuo acts swiftly and decisively to ensure her safety, even if it means resorting to extreme measures that could make him a murderer.

Parenthood demands sacrifice, whether it’s waking up in the middle of the night to comfort a crying baby or working tirelessly to secure their future. Tetsuo is not just a father who meets the expectations placed upon him; he goes above and beyond, ready to make any sacrifice, even if it means putting his soul on the line, to ensure his family’s well-being.
Realizing that his daughter remains a target for a criminal organization even after her abusive boyfriend’s demise, Tetsuo chooses to conceal the crime with the assistance of his equally courageous wife, Kasen. Together, they embark on a relentless battle, evading detection while simultaneously taking down the criminals. This daunting task proves especially challenging for a mere salesman with a penchant for mystery novels and a housewife, particularly when confronted with ruthless and cunning adversaries.
Not All Fatherly Love is Healthy
Tetsuo is not the sole representation of fatherly love depicted in My Home Hero. Another example is Yoshitatsu Matori, the father of Nobuto and an expert con man affiliated with the central criminal syndicate in the story. Similar to our protagonist, Yoshitatsu deeply cares for his son, but he has not been the best role model or guide for the young man.
Yoshitatsu has been plagued by uncertainty about his son’s whereabouts since the beginning. In the penultimate episode of the anime, when this father decides to personally investigate the crime scene, he is overwhelmed by the realization that he has lost his son forever. Witnessing the suffering of another father, Tetsuo offers to turn himself in to the authorities. However, recognizing that Yoshitatsu won’t find solace in that and considering the imminent danger to his own wife and daughter, our protagonist once again chooses to fight and protect them.
Although it may be challenging to empathize with Yoshitatsu’s methods and his role as Nobuto’s father, it is evident that his love for his son is genuine, and he is willing to do anything for him. In a certain sense, Tetsuo and Yoshitatsu reflect each other and showcase two distinct expressions of paternal love: one focused on protection and the other driven by a desire for vengeance.
The anime adaptation of My Home Hero concludes today, but manga readers are aware that there is more to come, with the story becoming even more intricate. Tetsuo, Kasen, and Reika will have to push their limits to save their family, and the narrative will introduce other instances of parental dedication, although none as steadfast as the humble salesman who leads the show. Tetsuo Tosu is an ordinary father, just like any other, but when faced with extraordinary circumstances, he transforms into a hero. Today, I extend my heartfelt wishes to all anime-loving parents, as you are our heroes too.
